A lure is a treat or toy used to move your dog within space. This is to help the dog understand what position you would like him to do, such as sit, down or stand. It is better for the dog’s learning process to lure him into position, rather than manipulating the dog’s body on your own.
Once the dog does the correct behavior, you as the trainer, would sound your clicker or say “Yes!” and then give the dog a reward.
When training, we always start with luring the behavior. Once the dog is confidently doing the behavior, we start to fade the lure out of our hand and implement a hand signal. Hand signals are great when asking a dog to do a behavior since they read body language really well. It is a form of communication that we both share.
